When to move your parents to a nursing facility

The decision to move a loved one into a nursing home or senior care facility is not an easy one. As the population of the United States continues to age, however, more and more adults are making these decisions for their parents and other older relatives.

Here are some signs that it may be time for someone to move their parents to a nursing facility in Minnesota.

They become forgetful

Memory often declines as people age, and this can be harmless and not necessarily a sign that someone should consider seeking full-time care. However, it becomes a problem when the older adult’s forgetfulness begins to put them in harm’s way. One example of this is someone going to run an errand and then forgetting where they are or how to get back home.

They experience falls

Many people with mobility issues continue to live healthy and independent lives in their own homes. But keep in mind that falls are a very common cause of injury and even death in older adults, so factor this in when considering whether or not to place one or both parents in a nursing facility.

Their personal hygiene declines

A decline in personal hygiene may be a sign that someone is having difficulty taking care of themselves. This can also be a symptom of depression, which is prevalent in older people.

By being aware of some common reasons for people to go into a nursing home, adult children can make good decisions for their parents and other loved ones.
